Performance

In our review, Norton antivirus performed quite well and even scored high ratings. We were impressed with the speed each issue was handled by each of the Norton products we tested. Along with blocking each threat, it would also give a Full Report breaking down the details of each threat.

Scanning

Norton anti-virus software offers a few different scan options. A quick scan gets completed within 30 seconds and searches for malicious viruses lurking in the system. The full system scan usually runs for a longer duration, which could vary from anywhere around 1 hour or more. However, the full scan didn’t really impact other functions of our system. Unlike with some other antivirus protection software, we were able to open other programs, play games, and even do more strenuous activities like streaming while the full scan was running in the background. All the detected threats would get automatically quarantined due to its Auto-Protect feature.

Malware protection

In the malware protection test, Norton’s programs quite effectively blocked an attack via a popup window each time we tried to install viruses such as JavaScript Crypto Miner, Embedded VLC AMV files, and  EICAR test virus. The software was able to remove each test malware even before it could be installed.

Ransomware Protection

Unlike most other antivirus software, the performance of Nortons’ ransomware detection feature was quite efficient. While running our tests, it would block malicious programs from tampering with any files across your device. It doesn’t stop any program that you have set as a trusted program. As soon as it identifies ransomware, Norton displays a red cross sign on our computer screen along with a list of quarantined and removed security risks from our system.

Phishing Protection

When we add the Norton antivirus Chrome browser extension it instantly switches the standard Chrome browser with the Norton SafeSearch one. We would have preferred if the software would have given us a warning before doing that automatically. However, the feature did not disappoint. A green checkmark icon appears next to each trusted site in the Google searches.

An orange or red warning sign would pop up every time we came across a potential phishing scam website. When we ran a Phishing Test Tool, the software’s phishing feature displayed an alarming sign and blocked all access.

Advantages

Compared to the competing brand, Norton has two primary advantages. Bundling the LifeLock identity theft protection along with the antivirus software is a masterstroke. Other brands do offer identity theft protection services, but they are sold separately for a comparatively higher charge. LifeLock will just add $30 to $50 a year to the price of a subscription. The other advantage is that all Norton antivirus packages provide a VPN, password manager, and cloud storage from 10 to 500 GB, whereas most brands only offer such features at higher price points.

Installation

The installation is as simple as it gets. It starts with a 3.5MB beachhead installer and once you input a valid product license, the full 226MB installation program gets downloaded. The installation takes around 10 minutes. However, if you opt for LifeLock ID protection, the installation takes a bit longer since you need to enter a lot of personal information and go through a bunch of questions to accurately establish your identity.

Disable Norton Antivirus Software

Norton allows you to disable security for a specified duration with just three simple steps:

  1. Right-click the Norton icon displayed in the notification area on the taskbar and then click “Disable Auto-Protect.”
  2. In the “Security Request” window, open the “Select the duration” drop-down list and select the duration for which you want the software to be turned off.
  3. Click “OK.”

Uninstall Norton Antivirus Software

The uninstallation process is as easy as the installation. Go to the Windows Control Panel and open the Add or Remove program. Then click on uninstall. If you are planning on installing some other anti-virus software, we advise you to uninstall the one which is already present in the system first.

Software Updates

Norton provides virus definitions to update multiple times in a day. These updates happen automatically in the background without us even noticing it. According to Norton, the virus definitions usually get updated three times a day, and more often in response to emerging threats. Like all other antivirus software vendors, even Norton allows us to conduct on-demand update checks. You will also get alerts from Norton before your annual license expires well in time to get it renewed.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Norton over the years has proved itself to be a solid option for antivirus and internet security protection. The competitively priced product has a great track record for virus and malware detection. Unlike most other brands, Norton bundles unlimited VPN,  password manager,  parental controls, cloud storage, and the other great benefits along with its main security features.

With a great lineup of personal digital-security and privacy products, especially Norton LifeLock you can protect a single device or an entire household’s devices. No other brand offers a package like the Norton LifeLock which pretty much covers all aspects of modern-day security in a single product. If the company focuses on rectifying all the drawbacks in its future updates, Norton Antivirus software can lead the market from the front.
