2. Essential Oils
1. Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil is great for decongestion due to the presence of menthol, which has antispasmodic properties and is a natural expectorant. Antibacterial properties of the oil can help fight infections that cause phlegm accumulation in your body.
In a bowl of steaming hot water add 7-8 drops of peppermint oil. Inhale the steam with your head covered with a towel or blanket. The peppermint oil vapors will go right up to your lungs and help in decongesting the phlegm build-up and relaxing your lung muscles. You can do this process twice every day.
2. Eucalyptus Oil
Eucalyptus oil is a potent decongestant because it contains eucalyptol, an antibacterial agent. The oil’s decongesting properties help break up the phlegm, while its antimicrobial properties keep the infections away.
In a bowl of steaming water add 6-8 drops of eucalyptus oil and inhale the decongesting vapors. Make sure you cover your head with a towel so the steam goes directly into your lungs. Do this 1 to 2 times daily for the best results.
